Additive manufacturing also known as 3D printing enables for fast, efficient and cost effective production that also contributes towards value-added processing.

Platforum in association with Central University of Technology’s innovation services (CUTis) and other institutions together with lonmin mine, the primary producer of platinum group metals, contributed towards this historic event in the field of 3D printing in South Africa. The product appeared for the first time at the Rapid Product Development Association of South Africa (RAPDASA) conference in Durban, South Africa.

The 3D printing prototype was made using precious metals using selective laser melting. Lonmin’s contribution towards this project was to produce the platinum powder. The initial trails were conducted in August 2017 to suit the specifications for additive manufacturing printing process.

This new venture will change the environment of energy, automotive and the medical industry and spearhead better and enhanced technological innovations such as these.
